Driving from the UK to Bulgaria.

Many times people will say have you driven over to Bulgaria, up to now its always been a No! but that changed starting on the 17th of January 2009.

I came back to the UK to spend Christmas with my family, and to drive my own car over, which for 2 years has only been driven for 4 weeks.

It was going to be expensive, MOT, Road tax, insurance etc, but it had to be done, so imagine my horror when due to its inactivity it had developed a problem, when I started it, and it soon became apparent that it was only running of 5 Cylinders. The Car in question is a BMW 525i, and I knew it wasnt going to be cheap, also time was against me, and so I took a gamble.

Driving at this time of the year I imagined that there would be a lot of snow and ice around, so opted to buy a 4X4 for the journey.

It needed to be big, strong and with the amount of weight it would be carrying, powerful.

My first port of call was EBay, Looking around on there I came across a 1996 Mitsubishi Shogun. 3 Litre petrol, V6, 24 valve, Automatic transmission, with very short MOT and TAX, but this was great as once it came to Bulgaria it would not be coming back.

I looked around at other cars, Saloons, estates but kept coming back to this one on a hunch.

I asked the man (Dave) who was selling it and he told me that as he was disabled and about to collect a mobility vehicle that he had been offered 795 GBP for it, so this was the lowest he would take.

I looked around some more, than decided to make him that offer, went to the listing to see that it was now sold.

I was quite gutted, not sure why as I was buying it blind, but it would have suited me. Dave lived quite near me, had bought the car in May 2008, had works done, which included, new radiator, new brake discs, new brake calipers, new brake pads, new exhaust, new catalytic converter, towed his caravan once, then decided it wasnt for him, sold his caravan and decided to sell the car.

I suppose in this economic climate this was a big car to be selling, or maybe he was not in a rush, but eventually found its way to Ebay.

So, the car was sold and withdrawn from sale, I was gutted, but continued to look around. To be honest there was a lot for under a 1000 GBP, but none really grabbed my attention, and then yippee found another.

This was a year 2000 Vauxhall omega, fully loaded, Sat-nav, all mod cons, and has time was moving on wrote to the seller, but before I could get a reply it to was sold.

This was getting on my nerves now, it seemed my road-trip had ended before it had begun, but kept looking, found some nice ones but they where too far away, too expensive, not big enough, etc etc etc.

Then, miracle of miracles, the shogun was back up for sale, the man who bought it made some excuse about not being able to afford it. I wrote to Dave, asked for his number, called him and made a deal that no matter what I would buy within 2 days when I came back to the UK, thank God he trusted me, so, the day after I drove to his house, saw the car, liked it, but remember a deal was a deal no matter what, so paid the 795 GBP, and drove away.

The day before I collected the car I contacted my insurance company for a quote, they gave me a price of 550 GBP, even with full no claims bonus each year I am forced into paying more and more, no accidents, no convictions and still it goes up and up, slightly disappointing, but before I commit I decide to shop around.

As I am now 51, I had received emails from Saga, insurance for the over 50`s, wish I wasnt but there it is, so went online, filled in information, and they gave me a quote, and boy was it a surprise, 165 GBP for third party fire and theft for the year, this was good news.

Driving back home in the Shogun I was listening for groans and rattles, getting a feel for the engine, transmission, which for me is a bonus as its automatic, and it felt good.

For the 4 weeks I was in England I used this as my daily vehicle, driving in stop start traffic, auto gearbox was a blessing, medium to long distances and it seemed to drive better and better, but its big test was to come.

I checked the water, seemed OK, antifreeze was fine, quick check of the oil, and that was it, no service, no top-ups, just ready to drive over to Bulgaria as it was when I picked it up.

So, now the day had arrived, and believe me the car was full, box after box, many with personal items, several tool boxes, mirrors, bought in the UK for our English pub, youll find links to this on the left of the website.

A friend of Mine, John, in Bulgaria had lent me his sat-nav, it seemed that going through Serbia could be a problem, so set it to take me to Bucharest in Romania, and before I got there to set it for Ruse, Bulgaria, the only changes I had to make.

I set-off the day before I sailed to go to Hull, as this was my route, Hull to Zeebrugge, and stayed overnight at the Camponile hotel (Travel-lodge) in Hull. Cost for the room was 37.50p, this was a discounted price as I booked online.

The Ship (The Pride of York) sailed at 6:30pm and boarding began at 4:30pm. The cost was 161 GBP which included a club cabin, this included non-alcoholic mini bar, with 8 drinks, all of which where free. As the crossing was 15 hours it made sense to get a good nights sleep.

Boarding was easy, everything is laid and marked out well, you drive up, show your passport, drive around the corner, your then told which lane to wait in, and when they are ready they tell you to drive on board. When you book your told which deck your room is on, up 2 flights of stairs, and lady gave me room key, thats it, now I am on board, settled in the room and decide to take a look around.

The ship was the pride of York, which comprised of Continental caf bar, Flanagans restaurant, 2 bars, live music, small casino, a quiet room, the upper moonlight deck, and a large duty free shop, as well as a small shop, chocolates, cigarettes etc. All in all a good place to be and explore.

The Captain then came on the tannoy and informed us that weather conditions where predicted to be a force 8 gale with south westerly winds, sounded fun, but he did say that the ship had stabilisers so they would try to make it as peaceful as possible.

It took about 45 minutes to leave the harbour, quite a complicated place, and being pushed and shoved by tugs was good to watch, incidentally the cabin has a large window, not the porthole I was expecting.

About 11pm I fell asleep, and boy did I sleep well, the rocking of the ship was like being in a cradle. The waves hitting the ship woke me twice, sounded like metal on metal, but found it quite exciting, might have been different had the ship lurched from side to side all night, but it didnt.

At one point I decided to go outside for a cigarette, to do this you exit any door, but went to the back of the ship. The wake from the engines was enormous, but being at the back decided to have a look where we where going, and duly stuck my head around the corner, Now that was windy, and looking down at the dark water below decided to step back, realising that anyone who fell in the water was a gonna.

A couple of other ships passed us, quite closely, in fact surprisingly close, but no problems. Back to bed, woke up at about 8:30am, went and gad a croissant, cup of coffee, and made sure my case was packed again.

Then went on deck again to watch the ship enter Zeebrugge, Big place, hive of activity, and when it was announced we could now go to our cars, made my way down, prepared the sat nav, and 15 minutes later drove into Belgium.

Once I left the port I followed the voice instructions from the Satnav, and after about 10 minutes thought this cant be right?, she was taking me down back streets, alleys, but my fears where unfounded as after about 20 minutes I was on the motorway.

Belgium was surprisingly uneventful, not sure what I was expecting, but could have still been in England, The motorways are excellent as you would expect from such a well developed country. It was slightly overcast but clear, and so I sat back for the journey, put on some music and relaxed. I was overtaken a couple of times at high speed, always by black cars, so seems this black/fast car mentality is rife everywhere, sad thing was later I saw one of these cars in an embankment resting against a tree, emergency services where already there so he certainly must have cleared some ground before I arrived. Apart from that Belgium was quite uneventful. Onto the next country, well a small part of it.

Cut across, albeit briefly, Holland, same thing, excellent motorways, nice scenery, but no tulips or windmills, and then entered Germany. Germany was lovely, but it was getting late, when suddenly I entered a blizzard. Gritters where out in force, roads where pretty clear apart from the fast lane, but not enough to switch to 4-wheel drive. Passed very closely to Koblenz, a place I had been to many years before.

I think at this point it would be wise to stop, I would suggest taking it easy, enjoy your trip and keep topped up with snacks, water and rest where you can. Stopping every 2 hours is the advice, get out stretch your legs, and get some air. Good advice to give, but unfortunately I was not following it myself and pushed on, and on.

I was not sure where I would be going, only the sat-nav knew, so decided to make sure the fuel gauge never went below quarter of a tank. With the sharp decrease of the pound against the euro fuel is pretty much on par with UK prices.

At some point I was wondering when to stop, but fuelled by adrenalin just kept on going getting to the back end of Austria, as I entered Austria I stopped at a motorway service station and bought for first road tax of the journey, I will clarify these figures later, but as I remembered it was about 5 Euros, they will issue you with a small sticker for you windscreen, make sure you place it there and put the receipt where it can be found easily, just in case the police stop you and want to check it, Thank God I did, as your about to read, I did indeed get stopped by the police.

I had been driving way too long now so decided to stay somewhere for the night. Before I had chance to stop, a Police Ford galaxy drove up alongside, sounded his horn, and the passenger held a lit baton out of the window, indicating that I should follow him, which I did for about 1 mile, then we pulled into a weighbridge area and he made it clear he wanted me on the bridge.

He asked for my documents which I handed over, checked my road tax, brought up some details on his laptop, and told me to wait. To be fair the vehicle was full as I mentioned earlier loaded to the hilt, but certainly within its carrying capabilities.

Now what happened next was slightly surreal, here I am driving an English car, with GB stickers, and a man comes up to the window and asks am I Bulgarian?, how strange is that, apparently he was driving his wagon, had been pulled over also and was 40kgs overweight, I heard the policeman say this was a fine of 70 Euros, The Bulgarian argued a little, and the policeman then told him they where going to drive a little and would be back in an hour, I just kept my mouth shut. I was handed the documents back, nothing to worry about and set-off again, at which point it started snowing again.

I had at this point travelled about 745 miles without stopping except for fuel, and to be honest felt like I could do the same again. But I knew I had already done too much so watched for somewhere to stay on the motorwar, found services with Hotel and pulled in.

I expected motorway services accommodation to be expensive, and it was, about 90 Euros, no breakfast, but these are motorway services so what can you do. There was a pizzeria on the services, nice place, was hungry so went and bought one, again it comes back to expense, the pizza was big enough for 4, but what was left took it with me to the room, showered, ate my pizza and watched a little TV. The room was nice, but I was only going to sleep, so my advice, if your on a budget, is pull off the motorway and find something cheaper. I did notice a lot of towns and villages at nearly all exits of the motorway so Im sure they are out there, and not too far away. Next morning, woke up, Coffee, Cigarette, and away we go again.

After a good nights rest I just seemed to eat up the miles and entered Hungary, to be honest I did not even know I had till I noticed the writing, pulled in at the first garage, filled up, and bought my second road tax, about 6.50 Euros. The day seemed long and the sat-nav instructed me to head towards Szedek, which I did, and thought once again does this thing know what its doing. Travelled through the town of Szedek, I was heading towards the city of Budapest, well at least it ring road. This is a large city, but roads are excellent, drivers are good, scenery is nice and on that day the weather was bright and clear. Just before the city I pulled in at a roadside restaurant. I hadnt dealt with anyone yet that did not speak English, and this was the same. Having no Hungarian Florin, I asked if I could pay for a meal in euro, this wasnt a problem, and although I got slightly below the going rate it wasnt enough to bother me. So I order myself Coffee and Goulash, and it was good. After a quick use of the facilities I was on my way again and leaving Budapest behind me began my trek through many villages, stunning countryside, good drivers, friendly people and nice weather.

Suddenly rounding the corner I entered the Romanian border crossing for this area. Up to this point, it had been smiles, and open friendliness, now I was parked alongside 3 Romanian border guards. Its so funny the impression you gain of a country by your first dealings with its people, But having been in Bulgaria for coming up to 4 years, and making many crossings into Romania for airport pick-ups and drop-offs etc it was no surprise to me. They where efficient, but a little smile would have been nice, you know the idea, "Hi and welcome to our country", but nope, just a nod of the head waving me on once passport had been checked. Oh nearly forgot, just before the booths of passport control there are 2 small kiosks, one for road tax if your coming the other way and entering Hungary, the one on the right is for road tax for when you enter Romania, this cost me about 7 euros. Now I was in Romania heading towards Timisiaori, and had to face driving over the mountains, and prepared myself for this famous mountain drive, I travelled through several cities, the usual madness on the roads, but kept going until suddenly began to climb these mountains.

Now, I had heard stories of these, bad roads, crazy drivers, must say the drivers where not to bad, but the roads where horrible, no surface on many of them, hairpin bends, chicanes, to be honest I loved it, certainly made the drive more interesting. It was getting late now, and wondered where to stop. The mountains are not as high as I imagined, but you do climb steeply in places, there are safety barriers, but be careful. Taking the surface off the road makes it quite slippy, your tyres cannot get all the grip they needed and on one bend I fell the car slip a little, just backing of the throttle the rest of the way made it better and more relaxing, having cleared the mountains I was coming to the Danube town of Turno Severin, and once over the mountains saw a sign for the Continental hotel, so decided to stop there. The place was lovely, friendly and at 40 Euros for a smoking room with en-suite, TV etc was a great place to stay. The Restaurant is open all night so had a nice meal and then slept. Pictures below;

Since leaving Austria I had travelled roughly 560 miles, making a total of 1305 miles since leaving the ferry in Belguim. The Satnav showed I had 248 Miles to go.

Next morning I set-off about 10am, and after about an hour drive now set the Satnav for Ruse, Bulgaria. I set it to favour motorways, meaning I would be heading towards Bucharest, then picking up the ring-road and swinging down towards Ruse.

It took me about 6 hours to travel across Romania, much of this where large cities that once again had the usual Romanian drivers, mad pedestrians, and even madder wildlife, but no problems, just kept going, me and the Mitsubishi.

Like a lot of Eastern European countries the roads can be bad at times, but not as bad as you would imagine, I know of roads in the Uk that are not very good. Just keep an eye on the road ahead, watch for potholes, raised grids etc and you will be fine.

In Bulgaria I hire cars to my clients and many times they come back with bent wheels, damaged tyres, unfortunately thats the way it is with hire cars, its not theirs so dont care, but this is your car your driving and a little more concentration will make sure you dont have any problems.

Its a long trek through Romania, you are on the last leg of your journey, but you cannot keep up a good speed, and it can feel tiring, try and relax, keep hydrated, stretch your legs and it will soon pass. For me this was actually the most exciting part of the journey, the other countries are great, but all very samey, Romania with its outlying villages and strangely designed cities is like going back in time, to what perhaps the Uk once was.

Eventually came across signs for Bucharest. I had heard of a ring road taking you around the city, and this was found easily, but just a couple of points, firstly this is not a road, its a mud track, filled with lorries, pot-holes that made me thank God I had bought a 4x4, and no signs at all, which reminds me, if your doing this journey, for Gods sake, beg steal or borrow a Sat-nav, or, if your travelling with your partner, get a good lawyer ready for the divorce, without one the stress would be incredible. The drive from this side of Bucharest to the bridge in Ruse, Bulgaria takes about an hour, and because I live in Ruse and travel to Romania for airport collections, to me this road is familiar, and gives me time to ponder what I have just achieved. Some people do this route a lot, and are a little nonchalant about it. Its a male thing I think, "Hey no problems", "Easy" etc etc, I personally had no problems, and the car performed well and as I like driving it was kind of easy. But look at a map when you have arrived, trace with your finger where you have travelled and you will see it is an achievement. Its a bloody long way, with, if youre English, with 7 different languages, over long motorways, over mountains, through cities and villages

Suddenly, I see a sign for Giurgui, the town on the opposite bank of the Danube from Ruse, and felt that at long last this journey was coming to an end, and just as suddenly it did. I was driving over the Bridge into Ruse, after having paid the bridge tax of 6 Euro. As I entered Romania I changed at the border 100 Euro and was given 400 lei (Ron), having no idea of exchange rates, just took it and set off, now I am back I have just checked and realised I should have got 432 Lei, but not a problem, to be honest being so naive I expected a lot worse.

So now at the end of the bridge, a quick look at my passport and waved on. To those driving further you will need to buy road tax, but as I live in the city this wasnt necessary for me.

So after 3 days, 2 overnight stops, many miles I have a feeling of contentment, I too have now joined the brave souls who decided to drive, the question I am now asked is would I do it again, and my answer. I would have to have a bloody good reason.

As I have added more content since writing `I would need a bloody good reason`, I have had time to think. I would, for the right reasons, do this again. I considered doing with this with my Children, and that would change the trip completely. As a driver I have something to do, but for kids, well it would be tedious, so usual parent/driving rules apply I guess. Make sure they have something to do, books, and depending on age, colouring books, pens, paper, and if you can pickup a cheap handheld DVD player I am sure this would help. As a lot of kids use their mobiles and PSP`s for entertainment, make sure you have all the chargers and extra batteries you will need. I bought from Ebay and small inverter which when plugged into the cigarette lighter gives me limited mains voltage, it was about 13 GBP and had I had my kids aboard would I think have been a Godsend. Also make sure you have the chargers for your mobile phones, and adaptors for your 3-pin plugs, easy thing to forget, and if you run out of charge its sods law you will need it, or someone trying to contact you will get worried when they cannot get through.

Remember to have all documents for car, passports, receipts for road taxes etc in one place, saves fumbling around and getting stressed if you need them. I don`t mean to be patronising when I say these things, I`m sure you all know what your doing, but prepartion on this journey for everything is so important, it can be stressful for some as it is, don`t need to add to the burden.

I can return to the Uk knowing my business is in the best hands, And that she is doing the very best she can turning clients into friends and repeat custom.

Don`t want to make her big-headed but this lady is exceptional in any country.

Antonina (A.K.A) Toni

Deals with all office paper work, meeting and greeting clients at the airport and generally assists all round.

Also takes over when clients wish to shop for home items and deals with translations. Her English is very good, She has a bright and lively personality making her a joy to be around.

Didka (A.K.A Dido)

Didka helps keep the hotel in its usual immaculate state at all times.

Don`t confuse that with being a cleaner this lady is a lot more, able to stand in for Toni whilst she continues her studies.

Although unable to speak English her pleasant smile and brilliant attitude ensures that somehow we all still manage to communicate easily.

Tosko

Helps at night when me and V occasionally need to go out and eat. Tosko has had a tough life, his learning abilities in some areas are not so good, in others he is a wizard. He is a good lad and always manages to make others smile.

At last after some resistance on my part it has been decided that my picture will be placed on the site.
Not quite sure why I fought against it for so long, Guess I never thought it necessary really.

This was my last night in Bulgaria in 2007, 10 months of pushing the business forward, 10 months of working with the best team I have ever known, Only downside was being away from my family for so long, But needs must and I have to say it was well worth it.
Within that time we grew stronger, learnt to rely upon each other and trusted each other. Several new businesses where created which will be revealed in 2008 and I look forward to returning, to what I now call my second home...Bulgaria.

On a lighter note, This picture always makes me think of Charlies Angels. I had to sit in a restaurant all night with these 3 people alone, Laughing, joking, drinking, eating. I sometimes think this job is way too hard, but hey someone has to do it, and to be quite honest I love the fact that its me.

Thanks V, Toni and Didka for all your help, support and guidance throughout 2007.

Its now the 6th of November 2008 and once again I find myself wishing to thank publicly the above people. Being a foreigner with limited language skills and running several businesses is hard, after all I am in a business sense deaf, dumb and almost blind, I cannot read the language, find it difficult to communicate verbally, and cannot understand what is being said around me, so?, I ask myself, how are we doing what we are doing, and the answer is simple, its my team.

These girls work hard, and for them its very difficult working with me. I am not known for my patience and to be alongside V on a building site, asking her to translate building technical terms must be harrowing for her, and yet she gives it 110%, and its the same with Tony.

Didka makes me smile, we sit sometimes having coffee chatting away, and yet I speak very little Bulgarian and she speaks no English, but through a mixture of Mime, gesticulations, charades we somehow bridge the gap.

I could not and would not try to run this business without them, before these girls there where other associates and employees etc that where to be frank useless. They had no sense of urgency, none of hard work, and initiative wasn`t even in their language, but after many trials I now have the team that allows us all to succeed in our business dealings in Bulgaria, and although I know that many clients do not realise the input these girls put in, the stresses and the strains, and for all that receiving very little thanks, we continue to grow and to build not just as a business but as individuals, and to those who do not appreciate them, I would say this, Try it without them and you will soon learn just how difficult working within Bulgaria can be.

For 2008 I thank you, there have been new obstacles to face, economic climates that have had an effect, but we go on, and as long as we work as a team we will always go on...Together.

Then of course there is me, However as I sometimes get the 2 hour time difference wrong and you may be eating breakfast seems a little unfair to burden you with my face, For those with a vivid imagination I see myself as a cross between George clooney and an older Brad pitt (I wish)

Fishing In Bulgaria

Hi

As we have the hotel in the Ruse (Rousse) Region of Bulgaria, Which is a 2 minute walk from both the centre, Full of clubs, coffee bars, shops etc but most importantly for here, The river Danube.

I can offer accommodation for 16 anglers, leaving room for other guests, at 10 Punds per night per person.

The hotel is fully refurbished and everything is brand new.

Also I`m thinking of purchasing a cottage further out of the city which is 500 Metres away from a huge lake that serves as a fish farm.

I`m not an angler myself, But having sat and watched by both the lake and the Danube, It seems a mighty good spot for this sport.

We can pick up at airports, You could say spend 2 days at the hotel, 3 days at the cottage, then back to the hotel for a couple of days.

Flights are cheap.

I know I have a business interest in this, but at 10 Pounds per night I`m not exactly going to get rich. I see it more that if you come over and like it which I`m sure you will I can move on with the purchase of a second hotel.

As I write this I have just been offered for rental a huge lake that served also as a fish farm, I can have this for 25 years at very low cost.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

We also have one room that can sleep 4-5 people.

Welcome To " THE ENGLISH GUEST HOUSE"

The hotel has been totally refurbished to high standards, As well as 6 family rooms, its equipped with a brand new state of the art Sauna.

Everything is brand new, Kitchen, 2 Bathrooms with showers.

The building is fully central heated with internet options should you need them. Also the building is wi-fi enabled for those with their own laptops, and fax machines, landline telphones, copiers etc are available for those on business.

(As this is a small family hotel there are no en-suite facilities at this moment in time, But that may change in the future)

Each room has;

Twin Beds or double bed depending on room chosen

Windows are covered with nets and curtains.

Next to the hotel is a small landscaped area which will be partly

paved and have its own seating area allowing to to enjoy the warm summer evenings with a drink.

Fully booked the hotel can accommodate 24 people, and cots, high chairs will also be provided if and when necessary.

Further accommodation is being sought nearby thereby increasing our capacity.

Tea, Coffee and soft drinks are available as and when needed, and all rooms are fitted with cable TV

At busy times we will if necessary vacate the apartment thereby

creating extra accommodation for 4 people.

We have just converted the cellar room into another bedroom, specifically targetted at the many backpackers we have visit that require good clean accommodation. Being underground would be to some a slight inconvenience but for someone requiring just one nights rest it is an ideal safe and lovely place to stay. Prices will be cheaper than normal rooms and as can be seen by the photographs below it is ideally suitable for up to 2 people sharing.
The room is equipped with 2 beds, wardrobe and television.

The Guest house is the closest thing you will find to a hostel within Ruse.

Our prices are the same, but accommodation is better.

Our cheapest accommodation is is the Cellar room shown above, this sleeps 2 and has Tv etc, also is a great place to stay in hot summers being slightly below ground.

How to find us;

Situated near the largest hotel in Ruse the Riga.

Walk along the danube. Baba Tonka street is the next right after the Johnnie Walker bar.
There are signposts showing directions both on the streets and the main square.

As you leave the train or bus station you will see before you the main street in Russe, Borisova street ( ) Going down this street will bring you into the main pedestrian square. Finding the happy bar in the far left corner you will see the main courthouse approx where the statue of freedom points (Actually pointing towards
Moscow) But using her as a reference point for the courthouse is fine, we are 3 streets to the left of the courthouse (Baba Tonka street) which is accessed between 2 buildings marked as casinos, 150 metres down the street on the right is the English guest house, No 24 baba tonka street.

When you stand outside the Bus or train station behind you is the highest point in the Balkans the TV tower looking down the street with it directly behind you is the Statue of freedom, using these as markers its a straight line into the main square then follow the directions above.

I noticed a few people are registering here, without leaving any further details. There is no advantage to that apart from the fact you have left an email address.

This will not be used unless you express a desire to receive information from us.

So please, leave some details, although this will be a small community (Not trying to compete with Mybulgaria.infor here) it could be a useful point of contact, and a source for help or information should you ever need it.

Let us know where you are, What its like etc, You never know, make it good we could end up as neighbours

Seemed a good idea to have a forum so people can directly communicate with each other. Sometimes its good to know there are people who have faced problems and overcome them when buying in Bulgaria.
If you choose carefully problems need not arise, But it would be stupid too think that things never go wrong, They do, and thats were we come in, We have a good track record of helping people that have hit obstacles.
